500 years of the Reformation - Lutherstadt Wittenberg celebrates this major anniversary of the Reformation

On 31 October 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses against the abuse of the sale of indulgences on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, thereby not only changing the ecclesiastical world but setting in motion a reformation in politics, business, science, art, and culture. Lutherstadt Wittenberg is celebrating these 500 years of the Reformation in the anniversary year of 2017 with church and cultural events, seminars, and major exhibitions. At the heart of the 2017 anniversary of the Reformation stands Luther's doctrine of "justification by grace".

The Evangelical Church of Germany launched its Luther Decade in 2008, 10 years before the major anniversary of the Reformation. Every individual year the decade deals with a different thematic focus which in turn shapes the events and functions in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Visitors from all around the world and local residents alike can enjoy the varied and unique program staged by Lutherstadt, and together they await the anniversary year of 2017 with a sense of real excitement.
